Eastbourne Clinic of Natural Medicine Medical Acupuncture
MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE

Medical acupuncture is widely used these days by doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and osteopaths and is generally regarded as part of conventional medicine. Medical acupuncture is a western adaptation of Chinese traditional acupuncture using western, not eastern, understanding and the principles of evidence-based medicine.

Medical Acupuncture treats musculoskeletal pain - that is pain caused by muscles, joints and nerves. This treatment involves the painless insertion of fine needles into certain points of the body for the relief of pain and encouragement of self-healing. The needles are very fine so it does not in any way feel like having blood taken or an injection.

Many painful symptoms are the result of the development of trigger points within a muscle.  These can occur due to an imbalance in the optimum functioning of the spine and peripheral joints as a result of overuse or direct injury often leading to compensatory movement patterns. These trigger points are capable of becoming a source of both local and referred pain and can generally be treated by medical acupuncture/dry needling techniques.
